Wayne Rooney has shown his true colours with a classy message to Marcus Rashford.

Rashford, 27, was part of an Aston Villa side that almost stunned the continent on Tuesday evening. Villa had a mountain to climb in Paris, and they almost dumped out the Parisian giants with a 3-2 victory.

The on-loan star bagged an assist for Villa's third - but it was too little too late, with Villa losing 5-4 on aggregate. And Rooney was so impressed with Rashford's performance - he wants him back at Old Trafford.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, he said: "I hope Rashford goes back to Manchester United and performs like he did tonight. That’s what we all want to see as Manchester United fans."

He added: "Marcus Rashford wants to play for Manchester United, 100 per cent. He's a Manchester lad, a Manchester United fan.

"He needed to play and it was clear he wasn't going to play for the rest of the season. Sometimes, you have to put the manager in a position where he cannot leave you out.

"Marcus Rashford, in an ideal world, would want to play and leave a legacy at Manchester United. Whether that's possible, I don't know, but that's what I'd love to see."

Villa boss Unai Emery was asked about his future after the game: "It is difficult to plan it now," he admitted.

"He is feeling better and he played a fantastic match. We are very happy. If he is happy, we are happy.

"It depends on the circumstances for now and the next weeks."

While Dion Dublin added: "Marcus Rashford didn't score, but the energy levels that he had... he was making those defenders make mistakes.

"For me, he was man of the match for Villa."
