NEWCASTLE DEMOLISH CRYSTAL PALACE TO EDGE CLOSER TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT
Newcastle put on an emphatic performance for the second time in four days at St. James’ Park to beat Crystal Palace 5-0 on a memorable night.
Eddie Howe’s side scored four first-half goals before Alexander Isak’s second-half strike made it 5-0, moving them above Nottingham Forest and into third place.
Despite Howe’s continued absence due to illness, Newcastle are now in a fantastic position to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Jacob Murphy struck his eighth Premier League goal of the season to put Newcastle ahead, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from an extremely difficult angle.
Dean Henderson was left helpless as Murphy latched onto Kieran Trippier’s pass before unleashing a thunderous strike.
Palace had an excellent chance to level the scores after they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Nick Pope on Chris Richards, but Eberechi Eze’s penalty was hit straight at the goalkeeper, who stood his ground.
Newcastle flew up the other end straight away and Harvey Barnes’ cross was turned into his own net by Marc Guehi.
The hosts piled further misery on Palace during injury time at the end of the first half, scoring twice in five minutes to go into the break 4-0 ahead.
Barnes added to his weekend brace, slotting the ball into the bottom corner after a brilliant counter-attack started by Sandro Tonali.
Fabian Schar then rounded off the first half scoring, heading Jacob Murphy’s excellent free-kick past Henderson, to send St. James’ Park into pure joy.
Isak joined the fun at the start of the second half, striking into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Joelinton stole the ball from Maxence Lacroix.
The Swedish international has now scored 21 Premier League goals this season, and only Liverpool have won more league matches this season than Howe's side.
Newcastle now face a difficult trip to Aston Villa on Saturday, whilst Palace will aim to get things back on track at Selhurst Park against Bournemouth.

Newcastle United
JACOB MURPHY: WE ARE IN A GREAT PLACE AT THE MOMENT
"We are in a great place at the moment. We started really well, and we knew this game would be difficult; their away form recently has been top-notch. We knew we had to start fast.
"Everyone looks at the table, but we are not studying it too hard! We knew a win tonight would put us in a great position, but it is not done yet; a lot can change, and we have to stay on top of our game.
"I did mean the goal, yes! When the juice is flowing, you just have to hit it. The defender came out to me, so the cross was hard, so I just decided to shoot.
"A lot of people have shared texts to Eddie Howe, we are missing him, but once again we put in a performance that I am sure he would be proud of.
"I would say for my crossing, the biggest help was my former teammate Matt Ritchie, he taught me about having a better feel for the cross. The cross doesn't work unless there is good occupation in the box, I am lucky to have a great striker always in the box," said Jacob Murphy to Sky Sports.

NEWCASTLE TIGHTEN GRIP ON A UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT
Newcastle tightened their grip on a place in next year’s UEFA Champions League after a commanding 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
Eddie Howe’s side have now won five consecutive matches in the Premier League and leapfrogged Nottingham Forest into third, moving five points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea.
Only league leaders Liverpool have won more games than Newcastle this season.
Newcastle have hit the back of the net nine times in four days at St. James’ Park, after beating Manchester United 4-1 on Sunday, before putting five past Palace tonight.
With it now being confirmed that the Premier League have secured five places in next season’s UEFA Champions League, Newcastle are in an excellent position with six matches to go.
The Geordies struck four times in an electric first half, with Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Fabian Schar and a Marc Guehi own-goal putting them in complete control at the break.
Eberechi Eze saw his penalty saved by Nick Pope whilst Newcastle led just 1-0, and within two minutes of the miss, Guehi turned the ball into his own net to double the hosts’ lead.
Newcastle struck twice in injury time of the first half to further condemn Palace and all but confirm all three points.
Alexander Isak scored his 21st league goal of the season at the start of the second half, firing an excellent strike into the corner to top off a fantastic night for Newcastle.
Howe’s side missed out on Europe last season and fans will be hugely excited by the prospect of another campaign among Europe’s elite.
The Geordies won their first major trophy for over 70 years last month, beating Liverpool 2-1 to win the Carabao Cup and finishing in the top five would be the icing on the cake of a memorable season.
