Marc Guehi officially has the most goals of any player in the two league fixtures between Crystal Palace and Newcastle United this season - yet neither have counted for his side. The centre-back put the ball beyond his Dean Henderson - his own goalkeeper - during Wednesday's 5-0 Newcastle win at St James' Park, months after also facing the same embarrassing fate in a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.
The double whammy now means Guehi becomes only the second player to score an own goal - both home and away - against an opponent in the same season. Jamie Carragher had previously held the record by himself after two unfortunate errors against Tottenham Hotspur in 1998-99.
Guehi turned the ball into his own net when attempting to clear an effort from Harvey Barnes with the score at just 1-0 to Jason Tindall's side. A matter of minutes earlier Palace could have levelled the tie if not for a poor Eberechi Eze penalty being saved by Nick Pope.
United would go on to stun the Eagles after the 36th-minute spot kick miss, netting in the 38th-minute and both the second and eighth-minute of first-half stoppage time. An unhappy clash for Guehi, who, had things turned out differently last summer, could have been a Newcastle player right now after a failed transfer pursuit.
Speaking after the clash, Guehi told Sky Sports: “It was tough. Newcastle were definitely the better team. They showed their class from minute one, so it's important that we learn from this, and move on.
“It was right from the beginning. You could just tell they were the better team. It's got nothing to do with the penalty [missed by Palace]. That happens, it’s football. Again, it's important that we learn very quickly, because we've got another important game.
He added: “Our mindset is that we have no excuses. We all take responsibility. We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and make sure that we're better next time. It doesn't matter where you go. Every game in the Premier League is tough and it's important that we stand up to those challenges."
