Celtic up Greg Taylor transfer ante as they make bumper contract offer to keep free agent in Glasgow

It had looked like the 27-year-old was set to leave on freedom of contract but talks are underway over a new deal

Celtic are ready to up the ante and want to offer Greg Taylor a new improved, three-year deal to try to keep him with Brendan Rodgers’ champions.

It had looked like the 27-year-old was set to leave on freedom of contract at the end of the season, with Dinamo Zagreb leading the chase.

The Celtic hierarchy has been in talks with the Scotland international for several months and have now tabled an improved deal.

It would see Taylor get a significant wage rise on his current deal and would keep him at Celtic Park until the summer of 2028.

The issue for Taylor remains he will still have to play back-up to returning Kieran Tierney.

The Scotland international will make his prodigal return from Arsenal in the summer, when his current deal at the Emirates expires.

Tierney hasn’t had the greatest of luck with injury in recent seasons and there is still the possibility Taylor would get a fair chunk of game time.

The former Kilmarnock star has an offer on the table from Dinamo Zagreb, but that could now be impacted by the fact coach Fabio Cannavaro has since been sacked.

The Croatian side tried to get him out in January and then offered a big deal to land him in the summer.

Taylor also has interest from Major League Soccer, Italy and England.

Rodgers had always said he is keen to keep the player but last month acknowledged that he was likely to leave.

Taylor then came back in at the weekend and put on a man of the match display against Kilmarnock.

The Celtic manager was more bullish about the situation after the Killie game and admitted he would fight to the very end to keep a player such as the left-back

That is very much the case and Celtic are now looking to convince him to remain in Glasgow.

Taylor has also just become a dad and his young daughter Ruvie was a mascot for the Kilmarnock game. Family reasons could be another big factor in his next move and possibly remaining in Scotland.
