Manchester United defenders Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof both had to leave Old Trafford at half-time during their Europa League quarter-final comeback against Lyon.

Mazraoui started the match but was substituted at half-time and Lindelof initially emerged at the pause to warm-up in anticipation of coming on.

However, Lindelof then headed back down the tunnel and Luke Shaw emerged early and came on for Mazraoui.

A United source said the two players had to leave the stadium to address urgent family issues. Both matters are entirely independent of each other and the players are fine.

United were 2-0 up against Lyon when Mazraoui left Old Trafford and found themselves 4-2 down in extra-time. Remarkably, United scored in the 114th, 120th and 121st minutes to win 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate to progress to the semi-finals.

Lindelof lined up alongside Mazraoui in the United defence for the 4-1 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday. Shaw made his first appearance for United since December 1 as a second-half substitute at St James' Park.

The 75 minutes Shaw played against the Lyon is the most playing time he has had since he started for England in the European Championship final in July.

Shaw conceded the penalty that Alexandre Lacazette converted to put Lyon 4-2 up in the 109th minute.
