Lewis O'Brien has confirmed he would consider returning to Swansea City following the conclusion of his current loan spell, but says any decision over his future is likely to be out of his own hands.

The midfielder has been a huge success since his arrival on loan from Nottingham Forest in January, but his future beyond the end of the season appears uncertain.

As revealed by WalesOnline earlier this week, a stay in south Wales would potentially appeal to the 26-year-old. But at the time of writing, there hasn't yet been any decision over what could come next, with Swansea yet to make any sort of concrete move to keep him on board. It's previously been suggested that finances would likely be the main obstacle to extending his spell in south Wales, but it's clear he is enjoying his time with the Swans, becoming a key part of interim boss Alan Sheehan's plans over the last few weeks.

“I feel like it’s been a pretty positive time since I have been here, not just for me but for the team in general," O'Brien said. "We are on quite a good run at the moment and the confidence is high, as you can see on the pitch.

“What we have built in the last couple of weeks is actually something special. It’s good to be here with the lads and all the staff. We are just going to try to take it as far as we can this season.

“It’s been great since I have been here. You can see on the pitch I have enjoyed my time here.”

Asked if there was any hope of him potentially coming back to the Swans, O'Brien added: “It’s one of those things. it’s never out of the question, but sometimes it’s not in my hands, especially having to go back to my parent club.

“We will see what the summer holds. It’s never say never really.

“I am just focusing on playing the football we have been playing, getting Swansea and me into the best possible position at the end of the season.

“Then when I do go back there will be options and we’ll see what the best one is for me.”

Pressed on whether he would consider coming back were Swansea able to agree some sort of deal with parent club Forest, he added: "Definitely. I have really enjoyed my time here. I have probably played the best football I have played since I left Huddersfield.

“It’s never in my hands to just say yes or no, it’s always a lot more complex than what people see outside.

“But I have enjoyed my time here. I think the lads are great, the staff are great. I don’t see why not.”

O'Brien has become a father during his time in Wales, and his young family have moved down to join him on his short stint, with the midfielder suggesting their input may have some sort of impact on what could happen next.

“They are in Wales at the moment," he added. "I am trying to show them as much of Swansea as possible.

“You never know. Sometimes they have the best say.

“If the weather is all right… it’s if we can go outside. If we are stuck in the apartment, it’s not looking good.”

Interim boss Sheehan, whose own future at the club appears uncertain, certainly believes O'Brien is a player worth keeping on board if at all possible.

“He is fantastic to work with, absolutely wonderful," Sheehan said. "How he shows up every day, the mentality, the Championship know-how.

“The effect he has had on the place, he has been exceptional. I am a massive fan. I cannot speak highly enough about him and I make no secret of that.

“I think if you are at any football club and you get offered quality players, you have to take them seriously because good players are hard to come by.

“If he is available, should you try to re-sign him? I think that’s quite an obvious answer.”
