Ex-Aston Villa star Lee Hendrie has criticised West Brom's display in their loss to play-off rivals Coventry City - and dismissed their chances of finishing in the top six.

Goals by Jack Rudoni and Matt Grimes, early in each half, gave the Sky Blues a 2-0 victory and effectively ended the Baggies play-off hopes.

Frank Lampard's men have now carved out a three-point advantage over Middlesbrough, sitting in seventh, while the Baggies have drifted six points away from the coveted top six with only nine available.

Speaking on Sky Sports Hendrie believes City handled the game well. “I thought it was really cagey at the start,” he said.

“Cov got that first goal and probably against the run of play really, because I thought West Brom started the game a lot better.

“They started on the front foot, hit the top of the crossbar and then they [Coventry] go up the other end and you know that they're dangerous going forward with the likes of Haji Wright, Elllis Simms. Jack Rudoni has done it all season, he has been an absolutely outstanding player for them.

“Then they [West Brom] get caught with that high press that they usually do, [John] Swift coming on, probably not sharp and credit to, Grimes, he steps up and sticks at home

“I didn't feel that West Brom really offered anything. There was a couple of little moments, he [Tony Mowbray] tried to flip the coin and bring on [Daryl] Dike and [Adam] Armstrong to try and give the something but just absolutely nothing.

“It's a good, solid, professional performance from Frank Lampard's Coventry City and puts them in a really good position.”

The same can’t be said for the Albion, Hendrie added: “I just think there's there's better teams there. I really do. I think there's more equipped teams that can go and get that. Bristol City we've seen today and Coventry and Boro making that that late win. I just think they've got a little bit more than West Bromwich Albion unfortunately.”
