Manchester United will look to avoid setting an unwanted club record in Sunday's Premier League home meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United could set a new unwanted club record in Sunday's home meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Red Devils will be in a buoyant mood after they staged a dramatic late comeback to claim a 5-4 extra-time victory in Thursday's Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon.

Bruno Fernandes pulled a goal back in extra time against 10-man Lyon, before Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire netted late goals to send Man United into the semi-finals.

Their last four clash against Athletic Bilbao will be their main priority, given the fact that the Europa League offers their only route to securing European qualification for next season.

That is because Man United are down in 14th place in the Premier League table after mustering just 38 points from 32 matches.

As a result, they are guaranteed to record their lowest ever Premier League points tally because it is impossible to better their previous worst tally of 58 from the 2021-22 season.

Man United are now at risk of setting another unwanted club record in Sunday's meeting with 16th-placed Wolves at Old Trafford.

They equalled a club record for the most opening goals conceded in the Premier League season when they let in the opener for the 19th time in last Sunday's heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Red Devils will set a new record if they concede the opening goal in any of their remaining six Premier League matches.

Could Man United set another unwanted record?

Unfortunately for Man United, they could also set a new club record for the most defeats in a single Premier League campaign.

They have already equalled the current record, which was set with 14 losses in 38 games under Erik ten Hag last season.

Meanwhile, the 1989-90 season remains their worst for the number of defeats recorded in a single top-flight campaign after they lost 16 of their 38 matches.

The Red Devils can at least take confidence from the fact that they have lost just one of their previous 13 home league encounters against Wolves (W9, D3).

In fact, they have won their last two head-to-head home meetings, claiming a 2-0 win in May 2023 before recording a 1-0 victory in August of the same year.
