Manchester United have received a positive update on Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.

Cunha is reportedly nearing a deal with the Reds, despite reported interest from Arsenal and Newcastle United. Following a 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Sunday in the Premier League, rumours have surfaced suggesting that the Brazilian is keen to play under United boss Ruben Amorim next season.

The Manchester Evening News understands that Cunha is seen as a key target for the Reds as they look to bolster their attack. It is believed that the player's contract contains a £62.5million release clause, a sum that United would presumably need to fork out if they were to sign him.

The versatile attacker has scored 16 goals and provided four assists across all competitions for Wolves so far this season.

And journalist Fabrizio Romano, who specialises in transfers, has claimed that there is optimism at Old Trafford that a deal for Cunha can be reached. He claims that negotiations are ongoing for now.

"The negotiations are ongoing on player side," he said in his latest newsletter for GiveMeSport. "Discussions are going well, Manchester United are optimistic."

Sky Sports meanwhile believe that United hold an advantage over their competitors. It is claimed that Cunha believes United to be one of the biggest clubs in world football, and their current position in the Premier League table is not seen as a deterrent.

They add that one source close to Cunha believes the forward 'loves United'. This will undoubtedly be music to the ears of Amorim, who will be worried about the prospect of enticing players to Old Trafford, considering the season United have endured.

Recent reports from GiveMeSport, meanwhile, claim that Arsenal are worried about battling United for Cunha. It is understood that the Gunners admire the Wolves star's versatility and ability to change games. However, they are concerned that Cunha may not be able to perform consistently at the top level.
