Agent addresses Man United transfer rumour as Ederson deal 'moves closer'

Manchester United will be looking to make plenty of alterations to their team this summer as Ruben Amorim eyes a full rebuild

Manchester United's entire season, if it was not already clear, lies solely on the outcome of the Europa League.

The 4-3 defeat to Brentford on Sunday ensured that there is little hope of salvation in the Premier League this season and it is win the Europa League or bust. United have a good shot of reaching the final after a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao last Thursday, but Ruben Amorim will be aware of how quickly things can change after the last round's drama against Lyon.

Once the season ends - i.e. when United get knocked out of the Europa League - the focus will be fully on the summer transfer window. MEN Sport has taken a closer look at a couple of headlines surrounding the club.

Agent dismisses United return for his client

According to Gines Carvajal, the agent of former United defender Alvaro Carreras, there is no substance to the reports the full-back would be looking to re-join his old team or move to Real Madrid in the summer. Speaking to A Bola, Carvajal explained: "I don’t know where this news comes from, everything that is said in it is pure fantasy and, as such, it does not deserve any comment on my part.

"Carreras is doing very well in Benfica and will continue there."

What MEN Sport says: It would be interesting to see an alternate world where Carreras stayed at United and was able to work under Amorim. I don't think that the 22-year-old leaves Old Trafford last summer if he knows that reality is on the horizon. Now he has left, I would be shocked if he would return, especially given the turnaround has had. It feels like the full-back, while he would fit nicely in the United team now, is heading in a different direction in his career and questions should be asked as to why they allowed Carreras to leave at all.

United 'closing in' on Ederson

According to GiveMeSport, United are looking to close in on a move for Atalanta central midfielder Ederson. After another solid year in Serie A, it looks like the club are hoping to strike a deal with the Italians for the Brazilian.

It is believed this deal will only be possible if United win the Europa League and qualify for next season's Champions League. After a solid victory in the semi-final first leg, it is claimed that a move for Ederson is now one step closer.

What MEN Sport says: It cannot be stressed how important winning the Europa League is for all aspects of the club. Suddenly, the finances would improve enough to give United a safety buffer. It would also change the calibre of player that United are looking to target. Ederson is one of those better players and Amorim would be delighted to make more of these signings in the summer. The worry is, if United fall short of Europa League glory, will they be shopping in the bargain basement for players who may not exponentially improve this team? Only time will tell.
