There was an awkward moment during Leeds United’s Championship-winning parade as Ethan Ampadu appeared to confirm that Junior Firpo is leaving the club. On Saturday, an injury-time winner from Manor Solomon gave Daniel Farke’s side a 2-1 win at Plymouth and sealed the title.

Promotion had already been confirmed on Easter Monday following Stoke’s 6-0 demolition. Tens of thousands of fans took to the streets to celebrate with the players on the mile-long route, with the bus going through the city centre. However, Ampadu then turned heads after getting on the microphone to serenade Junior Firpo.

The Dominican Republic international joined Leeds from Barcelona in 2021. His team-mate started by singing the song that Leeds fans have sung regularly at Elland Road about their left-back.

“He came from Barca, he won the cup in Spain,” he sang. “He plays for Leeds now, he'll do the same again. He's f***ing magic and don't you f***ing know, his name is Junior, Junior Firpo.”

However, Amapadu then started shouting ‘Real Betis’ repeatedly. Firpo started his professional career at the La Liga club and has been linked with a return this summer.

The parade was streamed live on the Leeds United YouTube channel, and at one point, it had more than 50,000 viewers. During the footage, Firpo was heard saying: “Please, we can’t record that.”

The 28-year-old has made 122 appearances since joining from Barca in a £12.75million deal. His four-year deal runs out this summer, though, meaning he will be eligible to leave the club on a free transfer.

Firpo came through the youth and B-team ranks at Betis before breaking into the first team fold in 2018. However, just one season later, he left for the Nou Camp.
