Unemployed Steven Gerrard is reportedly the "preferred" candidate to make a dramatic comeback as Rangers boss.

Former Aston Villa boss Gerrard is on the lookout for his next managerial role following an unfruitful stint at Al-Ettifaq. After departing Rangers for a crack at the English Premier League, he was given the boot at Villa Park and then made an unexpected move to Saudi Pro League.

His time there, however, finished prematurely this season with Ettifaq languishing near the bottom of the table.

With interim manager Barry Ferguson exiting his role after the final match of the Scottish Premiership season against Hibs, the hunt for a new gaffer has intensified.

And The Daily Mail claims that the Liverpool legend - who led Rangers to glory in 2021 - is the "preferred candidate", reports the Daily Record.

The consortium involving 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh is understood to be keen on Gerrard steering the club ahead once the stateside takeover wraps up.

Real Madrid's coach Davide Ancelotti is also being considered but the head honchos seem to favour a leader with "frontline managerial experience."

They're eager to secure the new boss well in time for the pre-season beginning on June 23, crucially before the all-important Champions League qualifiers commence.

Ancelotti is due to assist his father Carlo with the Brazil national squad for two agreed matches against Paraguay and Ecuador before seeking a new coaching position.

This second game against Paraguay is scheduled for June 11, kicking off at 1.45am UK time.

CEO Patrick Stewart shared an update on the hunt for a new manager this Sunday, stating: "The search for our new head coach is progressing well, and we look forward to concluding our process in the coming period."
