Jamie Carragher says 'perfect' transfer will force Man Utd star to leave

Jamie Carragher believes Matheus Cunha is a ‘perfect’ fit for Manchester United - but his arrival may force Alejandro Garnacho out. The Brazilian forward is set to become the Red Devils’ first summer signing.

United are expected to activate a £62.5m release clause written into his contract with current side Wolves. Personal terms are not anticipated to be an issue.

Should the move go through, Cunha would arrive at Old Trafford off the back of his most impressive season in the Premier League having found the back of the net on 15 occasions. And Carragher believes he is going to be a standout signing for the Red Devils particularly given the system that Ruben Amorim plays.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the Liverpool icon said: “I think it’s a great signing and I think he’s a brilliant player. I love watching him play. He was in my team of the season at the halfway point, he had a great start to the season. I watched him at Man City a few weeks ago and he looked really sharp, quick. We know how the manager at Manchester United wants to play with two No.10s in his team. I think he’d fit perfectly.”

And while Carragher would be a huge fan of Cunha’s arrival at Old Trafford, he suggests it could spell the end for Garnacho’s future at the club. He added: "There is a lot of talk about Garnacho moving on because he’s come through the academy system and we know what that means for the PSR [Profit and Sustainability Rules].

“We also know Man United have got a few problems with that issue right now. I think if a decent offer comes in for Garnacho, Man United will probably take it.”

Carragher’s Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville has also shared his thoughts on Cunha’s imminent arrival. The United legend has suggested he would be an ideal addition to Amorim’s system.

He said: “They're desperate in that position, he would suit the system. When you think of the way that Manchester United are playing now, they've let Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford go, three players who are natural more players who travel with the ball.

“They're playing with Garnacho at the moment but that leaves them lopsided sometimes the other side, you’ve got Zirkzee when he was fit or Bruno Fernandes in moments stepping up one. Mason Mount has come in there.

“They need someone who can beat players, someone who is equally as good at running through the middle with the ball and travelling with the ball, sometimes they’ll go outside and support the wingback.

“He’s the type of player you can see Manchester United being interested in to suit the system and how Ruben Amorim wants to play. They’ve lost three players who play in that type of position so they need to fill those roles definitely or they’ll struggle.”
