Lyall Cameron on the unseen Rangers pressure he carried at Dundee amid transfer 'criticism'
The midfielder pulled the curtain down on his time at Dens Park by leading the club away from relegation
Rangers-bound Lyall Cameron admits trying hard to prove he had no commitment issues with Dundee took its toll.
The midfield ace bowed out in brilliant fashion with a brace against St Johnstone on Sunday.
Cameron contributed four goals and an assist in his final three matches as the Dark Blues dragged themselves clear of the drop zone.
That sizzling late-season form defied the Dee doubters who turned on him for penning an Ibrox pre-contract in February.
Cameron, 22, said: “It wasn’t the easiest time when I announced I was leaving.
“Fair enough, I got an awful lot of criticism from that and had to take that on.
“I felt there was a lot of apprehension over whether I was still committed to the club.
“Some people doubted that, but I always said that I was. And I have been right to the end.
“Every time a Rangers game came around, I happened to be injured.
“But that was the case and it was just unfortunate. I got flak for that.
“However, you just have to keep going. I’ve actually played a lot of times through niggles and tightness.
“Maybe in my position I shouldn’t have. But the type of person I am, I just want to always give my best for the club that’s supported me for the last few years.
“Dundee have been good to me and I’m glad I’ve been able to give them that.
“I probably felt I was trying too hard to prove it for a while. That’s why I had a wee dip in my form. It affected how I like to play.”
His two-goal Man of the Match display in the 2-0 win over relegated Saints will have had Rangers fans salivating.
Cameron says he can’t wait to get cracking on a new phase of his career after departing Dundee a hero.
“I’ve finished the way I wanted to and I’m absolutely delighted,” he said.
“I’ve been relaxed, getting on the ball, scoring and assisting in the last couple of weeks.
“Obviously, I can’t wait for what’s coming. I feel like it’s a new challenge and it’s not going to be easy.
“I live at home just now, so there’s that. Then obviously my family and friends.
“It’s a new challenge; you need to move on in your career and I’ve just made that decision. I’m looking forward to getting started.
“We’ve made sure I’ll be playing AGAINST Dundee next season. Hopefully I’ll get a good reception after the way I’ve signed off!”
