Ruben Amorim reportedly had to be talked out of resigning from Manchester United in January after growing 'disillusioned' with his start to life at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach has endured a tough six months in charge of the Red Devils.

Amorim could land his first trophy in tomorrow's Europa League final but it has not been an easy 40 games since he replaced Erik ten Hag to huge fanfare in November. It has now been claimed that he grew so disenchanted with his first two months in charge that he considered resigning only two months later. The moment reportedly came after a chastening 3-1 defeat against Brighton at Old Trafford, a match after which Amorim is said to have smashed a television in the dressing room out of frustration.

According to ESPN, associates including CEO Omar Berrada talked Amorim out of quitting and insisted that he had the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. United have said that although January was a low moment in the club's history, the 40-year-old's job was never at stake.

Amorim is indeed set to be given the resources to improve his squad in the summer transfer window. One major concern about his current options is that they do not all fit naturally into his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, a system he has been wedded to for much of his coaching career.

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is reportedly close to becoming United's first summer signing. The Red Devils are also in the mix to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich, with the forward harbouring a £30m release clause following his side's relegation from the Premier League.

Amorim has been desperate for a prolific centre-forward, having seen Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggle for goals this term. Delap has scored 12 of Ipswich's 35 top-flight goals, but United will face strong competition from Chelsea for the former Manchester City prospect.

Both of those deals could cost United close to £100m alone. There will need to be significant outgoings from Old Trafford if the club are to avoid a breach of profit and sustainability rules (PSR). In a letter to fan groups in January, United justified season ticket price hikes by insisting that they were close to the £105m limit a club is permitted to lose over a given three-year period.

Victory in the Europa League final tomorrow will boost United's financial position. Amorim's side, who are 16th in the Premier League, face fellow strugglers Spurs, who are 17th, for a rare taste of glory in Bilbao.

The second-tier European competition has offered the 20-time English champions some respite this season. They thumped Athletic Bilbao 7-1 on aggregate in the semi-final, producing two of the best performances of the Amorim era so far.
