Newcastle United have serious competition for Jonathan David this summer - if they decide to pay the sizeable agent fees and signing on terms for the Canada international.

As reported on Chronicle Live over the weekend, United have been urged to get their offer on the table for the 25-year-old after he confirmed he was definitely leaving Lille in Ligue 1. But we understand that other clubs have made more concrete offers for the striker in the last few days.

As Napoli close in on the Serie A title, Antonio Conte is keen to lure the goal-getter to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona where he believes his demands can be met and the offer of Champions League football will be satisfied. Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Monaco and Real Madrid are on his long list of admirers.

There is believed to have been contact on David from sporting director Paul Mitchell earlier in the year and he has got a rapport with the striker's agent. It is our information that David's representative Nick Mavromaras was at Newcastle's 1-0 win over West Ham in March but since then the interest appears to be cooling down as United assess other targets and the striker looks to make his mind up.

The truth is David has his pick of clubs and while Newcastle have looked at the star, it is not the simplest of deals to pull off despite the fact he is available on a free transfer. Fees for David to his agency and his signing on demands could easily take the deal north of £10million.

Newcastle do have more room to do deals from a PSR perspective but by the same token they can not spend wildly. Howe warned last week: "From my perspective, and I’m not in control of the finances, it all depends on the individual case. There in not a blanket, ‘No, we’re not going to break that’. Or, ‘Yes, we are’. It depends on the individual and if the individual is worth doing that with, then I think you need to consider it and maybe implement it.

"But you have to be aware that every decision you make has a consequence. So, obviously, you have to think that through carefully."
