Harvey Elliott has hinted his long-term future may lie away from Liverpool as the midfielder insisted: "I just need to do what's best for my career."

Elliott was handed just his second Premier League start under Arne Slot on Monday as the Reds crashed to a 3-2 defeat to Brighton in a game that saw the 22-year-old open the scoring on the night.

Yasin Ayari cancelled out that goal before the Reds regained the lead on the cusp of half time via Dominik Szoboszlai's crisp strike. However the Seagulls struck in the second half through substitutes Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood to win the game and stretch Liverpool winless run to three since they wrapped up the title in late April.

Elliott's only other start came in the 3-1 loss at Chelsea earlier this month and speaking to Sky Sports after the game at the Amex, the former Fulham youngster admitted it was tough being overlooked by the head coach.

"I think I've [shown what I can do] this season," Elliott said "It's been hard with how much I've played. I've tried as hard as I could and whatever happens, happens. It's football at the end of the day and in my opinion, I just need to do what's best for my career.

"It's a tough one because I think every player wants to play each and every game, each and every minute, but sometimes it's not going to happen. It's about reflecting and seeing what I can do better in my position and just going from there.

"But you know, I'm here at the moment, still got one game left and I'm fully focused on that."

Next up for the champions is their final game of the campaign at home to FA Cup winners Crystal Palace on Sunday and it promises to be a famous day as the Reds lift the league trophy in front of their supporters for the first time since 1990.

Elliott added: "You try not to get too carried away with the celebrations, we've worked really hard through the season. Some lads like myself haven't played as much and it's about going out and enjoying it.

"We want to win and enjoy it. We need to take the positives and take it into the final game next week.
