Sir Alex Ferguson called me the 'best he had ever seen' - now I want Man United return

Ravel Morrison has admitted that he would like to return to Manchester United as a coach one day.

The former Reds midfielder was once touted as a future star of football and his journey started promisingly after being spotted by United as a youngster. However, what seemed to be an upward career path took an unfortunate detour.

Troubled by off-field issues, Morrison's stint at Old Trafford was prematurely ended, leading to his transfer to West Ham in 2012. Yet, remarkably, it was a 14-year-old Morrison who Sir Alex Ferguson would tell senior players was the best he had ever seen.

Ex-Reds centre-back Rio Ferdinand recalls one particular moment when the legendary former United boss hailed Morrison's talent. “Sir Alex Ferguson, I remember, he called me and Wazza [Wayne Rooney] over one day and said: “look at this kid, he’s better than you, Rooney when you were a kid, he’s better than you, Rio, better than Ryan Giggs when you were kids," Ferdinand said via talkSport in 2019. "This is the best kid you will ever see.”

Morrison joined Precision FC in Dubai last September, marking the 14th club of his tumultuous career. He has gone on to make 20 appearances, scoring nine goals for the team. Yet, Morrison has now disclosed that he is already contemplating his post-retirement plans, which could include a potential comeback to M16.

"I've got my B licence now - I did it in the summer," he said on the Undr the Cosh podcast. I do want to get into some type of coaching [after I retire]. That'd be good. I'd like to go back to United!"

Ferguson has previously pondered what might have been for the former United academy star and once confided in Ferdinand about a particular act of kindness that left him dumbfounded. During a 2021 appearance on Ferdinand's Vibe with FIVE podcast, Sir Alex's comments reflected Morrison's inherent talent but also his more sensitive side.

"My first and lasting memory of Ravel as a young lad was that he [always] got time and space," said Ferguson. "He's always available to be on the ball, so unusual for a young lad of his age.

"Another thing about Ravel, which I've always treasured because no other young player who made their debut did it, was after the first game in the first team that he played, the next morning he came to my office and gave me a letter thanking me for giving me his debut. I was gobsmacked, Rio. The boy had a good heart, he was just beaten by his background."
