Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero drops a major hint regarding his future at the club amid interest from Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer window.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has dropped a major hint regarding his future in North London.

The 27-year-old has been marred by injuries this season, managing just 18 Premier League appearances for Spurs as they finished in a lowly 17th position.

Nevertheless, the 2024-25 term will be remembered for all the right reasons in the future, with Ange Postecoglou's side lifting the Europa League.

A solitary strike from Brennan Johnson in the continental final versus Manchester United ended the Lilywhites' 17-year wait for a major trophy.

As a result of their Europa League success, Romero and Tottenham are preparing to compete in the League Phase of the Champions League next term.

"We must continue" - Romero drops huge transfer hint

One of the top players in the Tottenham ranks, Romero has been linked with a move away during the club's recent struggles, namely to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

However, posting to his Instagram account following Spurs' Europa League success, the Argentine has eased the concerns of supporters regarding a potential departure of the defender.

"We achieved what we wanted this season as a group, and that's what matters and my name is part of the history of this beautiful club," said Romero.

"I want to thank you all for the love and support every day despite everything, but I have no doubt that staying together led us to success. We must continue, this is the path."

Romero had thrown his North London career into serious doubt earlier in 2025 by claiming that his goal is to continue improving as a player by "going to new places" when quizzed about his future.

"No-brainer" - Postecoglou outlines Romero stance

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham head coach Postecoglou is very keen to retain the services of the defender, stating that: "Romero is absolutely important to keep at this football club."

"You just saw the way he has been in the last [weeks] and he hasn't been fully fit with his toe, but you've seen he's a World Cup winner. He is a winner.

"You saw that in all the big games we've had and the lads certainly respect him very highly. He makes them walk a bit taller, so from my perspective it is a no-brainer that making sure players like him [stay], because if he goes, who do you replace him with?

"There are not too many out there like him. It will be very important for the club to try and retain him, and retain him for the longer term."

Tottenham will enjoy a well-earned break before pre-season matches against the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich later on in the summer.
