Liverpool: Merseyside Police issue statement after parade incident

Merseyside Police are today holding a press conference to provide further information regarding the car crash incident during Liverpool’s Premier League trophy parade. At 6pm on Monday, a car drove into fans and left 47 supporters injured, with 27 people rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

Police have already confirmed that a 53-year-old white British man has been arrested. They are treating it as a lone incident, ruling out the theory that it is terror-related. Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram confirmed this morning that there are "still four people who are very, very ill in hospital".

A statement has already been issued by police which read: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre. We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision."

What will be said?

Police are likely to provide an update on their investigation and the status of the 27 people, including two children, who were injured and taken to hospital.

They may also discuss further the identity of the driver, after a suspect was arrested at the scene.

Questions have been raised over how the driver was able to access Water Street. Charlotte Hennessy, whose dad James died in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, has already raised concerns regarding the traffic build-up in the area.

Liverpool Echo have reported that police are investigating the theory that the driver may have tailgated off the back of an ambulance that was moving through the crowd.

Where is the Merseyside Police press conference taking place?

The briefing will be held at the Merseyside Police headquarters. The building is Cazneau St, around two miles from where the incident took place.
