Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has sent a message to supporters as his exit from Old Trafford was confirmed this weekend.

The Swedish centre-back arrived from Benfica in 2017 as Jose Mourinho looked to bolster the defence. Despite plenty of managers coming and going since then, Lindelof has managed to remain a constant at Old Trafford making 284 appearances for the club.

His position in the United first-team has diminished over time and this campaign he made just 16 Premier League appearances for the Reds. However, Lindelof was given a full 90 minutes send off on Sunday as United beat Aston Villa to end a difficult campaign in victory.

Soon after the final whistle, United's social media account bid farewell to Lindelof and the Swede has since paid tribute to the club on his personal account. "There’s nothing on earth like being a Red," he wrote.

"Manchester, thank you from the bottom of my heart." Lindelof's former United teammate David de Gea was one of the first to respond to the defender's exit with a love heart emoji.

At the time of writing Christian Eriksen, who is also departing at the end of this season, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez had also sent their support to the Swede. Amid an emotional day for his family, Lindelof's wife Maja chronicled the final match on her Instagram story.

Among the posts, she paid tribute to United. "We grew up here," she wrote.

"Thank you for all the love. The best years of my life."

Then, after sharing a picture of a parting present United had gifted her for her children, she added: "The people behind the scenes at this club, not sure what we would do without them all these years."
