Paul Gascoigne has revealed the X-rated message David Moyes delivered to Everton’s players on his first day in charge of the club. Gascoigne, 58, began his career with Newcastle United in 1985 and made appearances for numerous clubs across the UK and Europe, including Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers, and Middlesbrough before joining Everton.

The Gateshead-born midfielder made his debut for Everton in 2000 and went on to make 32 appearances for the club over two years. During his time at Goodison Park, the England icon worked with Walter Smith until he was replaced by Moyes in March 2002.

And Gascoigne has recalled what Moyes told Everton’s players upon his arrival as well as revealing the message was behind his sudden exit to Burnley.

“I didn’t like the way he came to Everton when he was going to be manager, and that’s why I left,” he revealed to Esports Insider.

“He’s not played any top-level football or managed any big team. We’ve got eighteen internationals from the likes of Wales, Scotland, myself.

“He just came in, he says, 'I’m the manager. I’ve seen how you played on Saturday. Mess about with me and I’ll cut your f**king balls off!' Those were his first words, and I went: 'Well, I won’t be staying with him.'

“He did ring us up and say, come back to the club. Give me a chance to work with you. But I’d made my position there.”

Moyes returned to Everton earlier this year, replacing Sean Dyche, and Gascoigne has praised the Scot for the job he has done since he arrived back at Goodison in January.

He said: “Since he took over, yeah. He’s done really well. But he’s a good man. I think he’s mellowed a bit."
