Liga MX giants confirm the departure of their head coach - despite winning silverware
Although he led Cruz Azul to victory in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Vicente Sánchez has parted company with Mexican club Cruz Azul.
Despite delivering major silverware to the Cruz Azul fans this month, head coach Vicente Sánchez couldn’t convince the club’s management to keep him on for another Liga MX tournament, leading to the end of his tenure.
Cruz Azul confirm Sánchez departure
“CF Cruz Azul announces that, by mutual agreement, today marks the conclusion of Coach Vicente Sánchez’s time at the helm of our men’s first team,” the club revealed in a statement on Friday. “His work, along with the institutional coaching staff, was crucial in securing the club’s seventh CONCACAF Champions Cup.
“CF Cruz Azul publicly expresses its deepest gratitude to Vicente Sánchez for his contributions over these months, wishing him the best of success and keeping the doors of the institution open for future projects.”
Who will replace Sánchez at Cruz Azul?
Amid rumors that Nicolás Larcamón has been chosen to take over the team starting with the upcoming Apertura 2025 tournament, Cruz Azul said in their statement that their new head coach will be announced “in the coming days”.
Sánchez took over the team early this year, when Martín Anselmi left for Portugal to coach Porto. Although the fans didn’t accept him initially, he earned their trust with results on the field, leading the team to the Liga MX playoffs.
Although Cruz Azul were eliminated by América in the semi-finals, Sánchez steered the team to victory in the Champions Cup, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final on June 1.
Nevertheless, Sánchez failed to win over the club’s management, who began searching for a new strategist while the Liga MX playoffs were still being played. The decision was already made; they didn’t want Sánchez to continue with the team.
