PIC OF THE DAY: Lionel Messi 'shows up' with stunning Club World Cup moment
Major League Soccer side Inter Miami took on Portuguese giants Porto in front of a two-thirds full stadium in Atlanta, Georgia in the latest Club World Cup game
Footballing legend Lionel Messi took centre stage at the much-maligned Club World Cup with a stunning goal.
What did the GOAT do?
Messi stepped up in the 54 th minute of Inter Miami's game against Porto to rifle home a stunning free-kick. He did it in front of just 31,783 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia – a whopping 11,000 short of a packed house.
Porto underperformed in the game, despite taking the lead with an Aghehowa penalty after eight minutes.
But a second half fight back which started with a goal from Telasco Segovia on the 47 th minute saw the Major League Soccer side bag a surprising three points in a group also including Palmeiras and Al Ahly SC.
What's next for Messi and his mates?
Having drawn 0-0 with Al Ahly on Sunday, Inter will need to beat Palmeiras on Tuesday to top the group, but will actually go through with a draw. However, if they lose, then Porto could go through if they beat Al Ahly by two or more clear goals.
What's up with the Club World Cup?
Well, in short, nobody really cares about it. To quote Simon Jordan, it's a “money grab from FIFA,” with the tournament being played out in front of half-empty stadiums with teams who seemingly don't really care about being there.
